We source the vast majority of our grants through active outreach and are not currently reviewing unsolicited proposals. For more information, see Open Philanthropy’s grantmaking process.

Our team uses many different strategies to estimate a grant’s potential impact. In general, they look for projects that are:

• Targeted: Clearly focused on one of our strategic pillars, and ideally on one or more developing countries.
• Impactful: Has the potential to make a major dent in the problem, relative to the project’s cost. Promising signals could include targeting major sources of exposure or gathering information that can be applied across large numbers of people (e.g. because it concerns an especially populous region).
• Neglected: Covers sources or locations that aren’t yet being reached by other projects, or involves a strategy that historically hasn’t seen much financial support.

We prefer to share information about our grants in public, as long as doing so wouldn’t pose risk to a project or the team working on it.

If you want us to keep certain information confidential, or avoid publishing your grant, please let us know as early into the process as you can — and provide an explanation for what you’d like to keep confidential, and why.
